Sunny Kim and Peter Knight met in Sunny’s then hometown, Seoul, 15 years ago and formed a project, that also featured bassist Christopher Hale, called Bright Splinters. Since then they have worked together in numerous projects in Australia and abroad including the Australian Art Orchestra, and Hand to Earth.
Together the pair reformed Bright Splinters for a recent Melbourne International Jazz Festival Jazzlab performance for which they were joined by two extraordinary musicians: Theo Carbo (guitar) and Dylan van der Schyff (drums).
This quartet now returns to Jazzlab to further explore the musical ideas that enthralled their Melbourne Jazz Festival audience.
Sunny Kim builds sound worlds with her voice traversing minimal sampled vocal loops and swooping ecstatic melodies that float across the off kilter rhythmic grooves set up by the guitar and drum kit; Peter Knight’s electronically smattered trumpet lines the perfect foil for her agile virtuosity.
